I Am Still The Best Around, Serena Williams Declares

Serena Williams insisted Friday that she still sets the standards for women’s tennis ahead of a semi-final showdown with world number one Ashleigh Barty before the Australian Open.

The 39-year-old has been in ominous form but needed to overcome a mid-match wobble to oust fellow American Danielle Collins 6-2, 4-6, 10-6 in 96 minutes at the Yarra Valley Classic.

Williams has looked sharp having worked her way back from an Achilles injury suffered at last year’s US Open, which then led to a withdrawal from the French Open before the second round.

Asked whether she was still the best in the world when on top form, Williams was unequivocal.

“I absolutely wouldn’t be playing if I didn’t think that,” said the American, who is aiming for a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title.

Her unwavering belief further fuels a mouth-watering contest Saturday against home favourite Barty, who will be attempting to break her country’s 43-year curse in singles at the first Grand Slam of the year.

Williams has won both their contests but they haven’t met since the 2018 French Open — one year before Barty’s breakthrough Roland Garros title en route to the top ranking.

“I think it’s definitely a good opportunity to see where I’m going against the current number one,” Williams said. “I think that’s really important for me.

“Obviously I think for her, as well, to see where she’s going against my game.

“I think I’m a pretty big player just on all surfaces. I think all around it’s a really good opportunity for us both.”

Barty has yet to rediscover her best, having dropped sets to Marie Bouzkova and Shelby Rogers, in her first tournament in 11 months.

“I always love testing myself against Serena. Looking forward to it tomorrow,” she said.

Manchester United maintain leadership after goalless draw at Liverpool

Manchester United held on to top spot in the ongoing 2020/2021 English Premier League (EPL) after a 0-0 draw at champions Liverpool on Sunday.

Alisson made two good saves for Liverpool while Thiago and Roberto Firmino went close for the hosts as Manchester United remained top, two points clear of Leicester and three ahead of Liverpool.

Manchester City can go second if they beat Crystal Palace in the day’s late match.

Tottenham Hotspur are fourth after a 3-1 win at bottom side Sheffield United.

Victory for Liverpool would have taken them back to the top.

With Joel Matip not fit to return, Juergen Klopp played midfielder Jordan Henderson in the centre of defence and he and Fabinho kept Marcus Rashford largely at bay.

Firmino had a couple of half chances as Liverpool were the better side in the opening 45 minutes.

The second half was more open and Alisson saved well from Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba late on.

At the other end, Liverpool failed to score for the third game in a row.

Earlier, Tottenham moved back into the top four, thanks to a comfortable win.

Serge Aurier, Harry Kane and Tanguy Ndombele, with a stunning third goal, secured victory for Jose Mourinho’s side, after David McGoldrick had given Sheffield United hope.

They remain bottom with just five points from 19 games, 11 points from safety at the halfway point in the season.

“Fantastic performance from everyone today —— started really well, aggressive with our press and were clinical to go 2-0 up,” Tottenham striker Kane said.

“Even in the second half, when they scored, we didn’t panic. Tanguy scored a fantastic goal and we saw the game out well, which we haven’t done in the past few weeks.”

Ndombele’s goal was the pick of the four, flicking the ball over the goalkeeper with the outside of his foot from the corner of the penalty area.

“Tanguy’s goal was incredible, the technique he had to flick that ball back over the goalkeeper was truly special,” Kane said.

“There were a couple of chances I could have done better with, the most important thing is winning games.”

McGoldrick said Sheffield United would continue to fight.

“We knew at half time we had to come out. We thought we had a bit of momentum and conceded a sloppy goal. From there they saw the game out,” he said.

“We took a backward step today, but there are a lot of games to go, we have to go again. We aren’t throwing in the towel, we keep on going.”(dpa/NAN)
