A day after bandits released nine abducted students of the French Department of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, gunmen have invaded the institution and kidnapped a lecturer.
According to a statement by Auwalu Umar, the institution’s Director of Public Affairs, the incident took place at Sardauna crescent on the main campus.
Although he did not mention the name of the lecturer, an online newspaper, Saheliantimes, simply gave his name as “Dr Bako.”
The university spokesperson said the lecturer was initially kidnapped along with his wife and daughter.
He said the wife and daughter were released “when security agents chased the kidnappers into the bush.”
“At about 12:50 a.m. on Monday, 23rd November, 2020, kidnappers invaded the house of a staff member of the university on Sardauna crescent, area BZ, main campus, Samaru, Zaria. They went away with him along with his wife and daughter.
“The University security division quickly informed the operatives of the police intelligence response team that advanced to the scene following the distress call. There was an exchange of fire between the kidnappers and the mobile police operatives. When it was clear that they would be overpowered, the kidnappers ran into the bush along with the victims.
“As the police went after them up to kasuwar Da’a village bothering the university, the kidnappers then released the wife and daughter and went away with the husband. Some empty shells were recovered from the scene.
“The inspector general of police and other security agencies, as well as all relevant government establishments have been duly informed of the unfortunate incident,” the statement read.
ABU Zaria has suffered attacks by kidnappers lately.
It could be recalled that last week, the abduction of nine students who were on their way to Lagos for an academic program.
Their abductors reportedly demanded N270 million as ransom. The students were later released after a ransom was paid.
Kaduna, Katsina , Zamfara and Niger States have seen have seen more frequent attacks from bandits in recent years, despite increased security presence in the area.
Only recently, some police officers on a special assignment were kidnapped in Katsina State.
The officers were on their way to Zamfara State from Borno to carry out a special assignment before they were abducted.
They have been released, according to the police.

The Kaduna State Government charged El-Zakzaky and Zeenat with eight counts bordering on alleged culpable homicide, unlawful assembly and disruption of the public peace among other charges.
It could be recalled that House of Representatives, Amnesty and other Human Groups have severally asked the Nigerian government to obey court orders mandating it to release Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), on bail.
The duo have been in detention since December 2015, following clashes between members of the group and the Nigerian Army which led to many loss of lives and destruction of property.
EL-Zakzaky’s son, Mohammed El Zakzaky confirmed the development in a statement he personally signed and made available to reporters.
The statement said: “six days ago after a routine visit to the Kaduna State prison by my parent’s doctors, my mother complained of fatigue, fever, and a complete loss of the ability to smell. The doctors decided to carry out a number of standard tests in order to understand what the problem was. Among the tests that were carried out was a test for COVID-19.
“This was a routine procedure and it is important to understand that she has been denied treatment for acute medical conditions including severe arthritis of the knee for years now.
“The Covid-19 test came back positive. I imagined that due to the diligent way in which the prison management had been conducting and managing the facility, a Covid-19 outbreak would be extremely unlikely. Because we have been doing our own due diligence and taking all possible measures at all times, we imagined that they were safe from the clear and present danger of COVID-19. To the best of my knowledge, the prison authorities have also been doing the same.”

COVID-19 Hits Kaduna Prison, As My Mother Tested Positive
By Mohammed Ibraheem Zakzaky
6 days ago after a routine visit to the Kaduna State prison by my parent’s doctors, my mother complained of fatigue, fever and a complete loss of the ability to smell. The doctors decided to carry out a number of standard tests in order to understand what the problem was. Among the tests that were carried out was a test for the novel corona virus also known as COVID-19. This was a routine procedure and it is important to understand that she has been denied treatment for acute medical conditions including severe arthritis of the knee for years now.
The COVID-19 test came back positive. I imagined that due to the diligent way in which the prison management had been conducting and managing the facility, a COVID-19 outbreak would be extremely unlikely. Because we have been doing our own due diligence and taking all possible measures at all times, we imagined that they were safe from the clear and present danger of COVID-19.To the best of my knowledge the prison authorities have also been doing the same.
Once I heard of the result my first act was to ensure that it was tried, tested and confirmed. I expected that following our risky entrance into the predictable petri dish of Kaduna State prison for what it is; the person in charge of Kaduna State prison will officially do his job. And must inform the State Governor Nasiru El-Rufai and the chain of command that the current campaign of torture, extortion, corruption and murder has come to this and my mother Zeenah Ibraheem needs to be immediately hospitalized. This has not been done and so I have no choice but to scream the details out.
This is how it currently stands:-
On day 0/Zero. This most horrific news was delivered to the deputy controller of prisons (DC) and his most immediate superior (CP). He granted unrestricted access for all medical staff to deliver primary care to my mother, Zeenah Ibraheem.
On day 1/One The Medical Team was harassed and pestered to throw all caution and care, or risk threats to their persons, their families and their personal Integrity. During their efforts to deliver immediate primary care.
On day 2/two apparently the order came down on the controller of prisons (CP) to test again. The thorough and diligent efforts of all the many professionals who have done their job is not enough. The test result must be tested again. And so we did. Because apparently they want to test the veracity of medical results that were from the same labs following the same protocols.
On day 3/three my mother Zeenah Ibraheem is yet to be hospitalized. Instead there seems to be a commotion of people bent on using the COVID-19 virus as an assassination tool.
I want to ask; why is my mother not in a hospital? Why are you doing this? We all know that Covid-19 requires an immediate response of urgent adherence to medical advice. Why are the rules being bent against her and him? By her I mean my mother Zeenah Ibraheem. By him I mean Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky.
On day 4/four The Idea of follow appropriate protocol as the rules might require. Recognize that you don’t have to soil your hands in the same pit as the Evil trio. As an inaugurated, certified and confirmed, member of the hit squad that can kill people on command, I say this: this is not a joke.
On day 5/five at the 11th hour I am completely helpless and powerless to do anything to save My mother who is currently infected with Covid-19. If the same is true for my father I will not be able to do anymore.
Today is day 6/six since I heard about the outbreak. This is the Nigeria in which I was born, This Is the Nigeria in which I live, This is the Nigeria in which my brothers have been murdered, this is the Nigeria where you will never be allowed to take care of even your own mother.
From Day 0 the medically required procedure has been to:
1)The testing of all primary contacts associated with the positive patient, who is in this case my mother, Zeenah Ibraheem. And also my father’s primary contact.
These have been done.
2) Attend to the Medical Necessity that requires the immediate Hospitalization of all positive patients in this case my mother Zeenah Ibraheem.
This disruptive plague is not a joke. It has not disappeared, it will not miraculously disappear and it is not a conspiracy theory.
My mother is still in Kaduna prison at the moment, she is yet to be hospitalized, she is yet to receive proper health care.
Mohammed Ibraheem Zakzaky.

Namdas Becomes Chairman TWG On Civilian Harm Mitigation

The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), Thursday in Abuja appointed the Chairman House of Representatives Committee on the Army, Hon. Abdulrazak Namdas as the Chairman Technical Working Group on Protection of Civilian and Civilian Harm Mitigation in Nigeria.
This was dropped at the official launch of the Technical Working Group by the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) with support from Open Society Initiative For West Africa (OSIWA).
Nigeria has been fighting a decade-long insurgency that has placed civilians in the middle with millions rendered homeless and hundreds of thousands losing their lives. This has raised concern on civilian protection in this midst of the crisis and other security challenges in the country.
With this inauguration of stakeholders will be brought to underpin the protection of civilians and civilian harm mitigation in arms conflict as a critical element of the committee’s work.
The Technical Working Group is therefore expected to coordinate, collaborate and communicate more and design strategies that influence the frameworks, orientation, and operational guidelines of security agencies.
Delivering his address at the inauguration, Namdas urged the members of the TWG to demonstrate partnership and geniuses in their efforts.
” To address the evolution of the conflict in Nigeria and ongoing civilian protection challenges, the TWG is geared to advance strategies and practices that minimize civilian harm. Considering your strategic importance in the sector, your institution is carefully selected as a member of the TWG.
” There had been efforts to engage Nigerian government to develop protection of civilian policy/legislation that would put civilians at the heart of counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations as well as other military operations across the country. This platform is indeed novel and largely innovative to actualize this mandate using all administrative channels.” Namdas said.
He noted that the most effective way to restore security and deliberately combat violent extremism is to put the protection of civilians at the heart of Nigeria’s military operations.
” The primary objective of this working group is to bring together stakeholders from government, CSOs, and security forces (to include Police, Civil Defence, FRSC, Customs, and Immigration) to discuss protection concerns and improve civilian protection. Elevating protection of civilians as an objective in Nigeria’s approach to addressing these challenges will require changes in Nigeria’s use of its security forces, particularly training, doctrine, exercises, and operations of the security forces and its strategic influence with the citizens.” He added.
The Technical Working Group is expected to provide an opportunity for the state and non-state actors to dialogue and deliberate on strategies and best practices as well as take into account precautions in the conduct of hostilities.
According to Namdas, “No effective protection strategy can be conceived without a sound understanding of the violations/abuses that were committed: this includes, inter alia, their rationale, their direct and indirect effects, and the social and legal framework in which they took place.”
While appreciating CISLAC and OSIWA for providing the resources needed to host the inauguration, the chairman waste no time in asking for funds to be dedicated to activities of the TWG.
” Our earnest request should be that some funds should be dedicated to activities not earlier scheduled as there might be specific resolutions to work on aspects that will help galvanize the objective of this working group,” he said.
