A former lecturer of the Department of Languages, Kaduna Polytechnic, Austin Umera, has killed himself after shooting his wife in the eyes.
Reports say that Mrs Maurin Umera was attacked by her now late husband in the early hours of Thursday at their house in Abubakar Kigo Riad extension.
Dr Maurin Umera, a part-time lecturer at the Department of Languages, Kaduna State University, was a former teacher at the Kaduna Capital School. is receiving treatment at 44 Army Reference Hospital Accident and Emergency Unit.
When reporters visited the house where the late Mr and Mrs Umera were residing, it was locked.
But a neighbour who participated in conveying Mrs Umera to the nearby Alba Clinic on Constitution Road together with police said the woman was shot in one of her eyes and was bleeding seriously when they reached her.
“But we were advised to take her to the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in Kaduna because it was an emergency situationd,” the neighbour said, adding that both the husband and the wife were quite elderly.
“We found the fabricated gun used by the former lecturer alonh with blood stains all over the room,” the neighbour said.
The spokesman of the Kaduna State Police Command, ASP Mohammed Jalige, confirmed the incident saying investigation has commenced.

Kidnappers Abduct Minister of Agriculture’s brother in Kano
Suspected gunmen on Monday morning stormed the family house of Minister of Agriculture, Alh Sabo Nanono, and whisked away his brother named, Babawuro Tofai.
‘’Before abducting Babawuro Tofai, a young boy in the house was also beaten and he sustained a fracture in the course of the attack,’’ said Wali.
He said they are yet to get communication with the abductor.
Reports earlier say that earlier on Monday around 2.00 am, gunmen attacked Tumpapi village, Garko local government area beheaded a man and matcheted his son.
The duo were buried around 9.00 am on Monday.
The spokesperson of the Kano State Police Command, DSP Abdullahi Haruna, when contacted could not be reached as his phone was switched off.
Just in: Gunmen abduct Nasarawa APC Chairman
Mr Philip Tatari Shekwo, the chairman, All Progressives Congress (APC), in Nasarawa State, has been kidnapped, by unknown persons.
Mr. Emmanuel Bola Longe, Police Commissioner in the state, who confirmed the incident in a telephone interview, said unidentified gunmen in large number stormed the resident of the APC chairman near Dunamis Church, Bukan Sidi, in Lafia, yesterday around 11pm and took him away to an unknown destination.
Mr Longe, stated that security agencies had reacted swiftly by deploying personnel to different forests locations in the state to ensure safe release of the chairman by his abductors.
